For people with celiac disease, the gluten free diet is a huge life change that requires major emotional and physical adjustments. If you've just been diagnosed with celiac disease and you feel overwhelmed, no one can blame you. But don’t despair. Lots of individuals, organizations, and resources -- including all of us at About.com! -- are available to help you learn to do well and thrive.
Below are eight steps (and lots of links to additional information) to help you learn to cope with the gluten free diet.
Don’t Be Ashamed to Grieve. There is no way around this painful truth: the gluten free diet requires that you give up foods -- and food rituals -- that you love. It will get easier after a while, and you’re going to feel much better than you did before. You’re going to feel strong and healthy, and you'll avoid lots of celiac disease complications. But at first, it’s going to be hard. You Need to Be Gluten Free. Now What? What to Do When Your Child is Diagnosed with Celiac Disease
Learn As Much As You Can. Familiarize yourself with celiac disease and associated medical issues. There are many good books about celiac disease on the market now. (If you can only buy one, I’d advise that you buy Celiac Disease: The Hidden Epidemic by Rory Jones and Peter H. R. Green, MD.) Be sure to visit the web sites of the major celiac organizations, and find a local support group. The Facts about Celiac Disease True or False? Know the Myths about Celiac Disease Links to Major Celiac Organizations in the US and Canada and around the World Why You Should Join a Celiac Support Group
Tell Your Family and Friends. It’s important to tell your family and friends –- and even selected co-workers -- about your diet. One reason to tell your family is that there’s a strong genetic component to celiac disease. If you have the disease, your relatives might unknowingly have it too. Also, by telling your friends and relatives about your celiac disease, you’ll be giving them a chance to rise to the occasion and help you stay safely gluten free. As hard as it can be to follow a gluten free diet, it is almost impossible to do it in secret. Hospital Delivery- NOT A GOOD IDEA!

  • We do NOT recommend shipping to hospitals. We recommend shipping to a home address. If a basket is returned or forwarded by the hospital because the patient has left, the reshipping costs will be charged to you -- no exceptions.
  • Hospitals receive mail at a set time once a day and not at all on weekends. If a package arrives after the hospital's daily delivery/pickup, the mailroom may not accept or deliver the package that day.
  • Mailrooms are closed on weekends. Packages received on a Friday will most likely not be delivered until Monday.
  • Hospitals will return the basket to us if the patient has left- or forward to the address they have on hand. We cannot be responsible for the condition of the gift basket once it has been forwarded. We carefully pack and ship our gifts to arrive in perfect condition, however they are fragile and do not endure multiple shipping very well. If returned to us, we will contact you for the home address but must  charge for redelivery to the home address -- no exceptions. We also cannot refund shipping charges for packages received by the hospital mailroom but not delivered to patients before they go home. If you cancel the order, we must wait until the gift is returned to us from the hospital before refunding the basket price. We cannot refund the shipping price.
  • Our recommended solution- Please ship to their home address.
